Rite Aid to Close 33 New Jersey Stores Amid Bankruptcy

Rite Aid is closing — or has already closed — at least 33 stores across New Jersey following its May bankruptcy filing, marking the company’s second bankruptcy since 2023, according to court documents.

The closures affect locations throughout North, Central, and South Jersey, including the Jersey Shore. In a statement on May 15, the pharmaceutical retailer announced it had reached multiple sale and pharmacy services transition agreements. These agreements will transfer pharmacy assets from certain Rite Aid locations to major operators such as CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Albertsons, Kroger, and Giant Eagle.

Additionally, some Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs stores in select states will be converted to CVS Pharmacy as part of the restructuring strategy.
